SES unit controller thanks Bendigo for coming together for fundraiser

The RSL hosted a well-deserved night out for SES volunteers - as well as their supporters.

They may be the first ones anyone would want at the scene of an emergency, but it turns out they're also the ones you want when organising a party.

Emma "Pocket Rocket" Ebery was the key organiser of the night and it's safe to say it was one of Bendigo's 2024 highlights - even if it's only March.

Eight rounds of trivia spanned all the popular themes of sport, film and music - also spanning into more pra

Shearer guilty of ice-fuelled theft of guns keen to turn life around

Lucas Robert Walters, 38, was a law-abiding shearer for many years but the County Court sitting in Bendigo heard a series of tragic deaths and undiagnosed mental health concerns had led to him using methylamphetamine daily as well as drugs like GHB.

The court heard the matter of gun thefts was the most serious of the charges - particularly as two of the weapons are yet to be recovered.

In an interview he said he had found the air rifle on the bank of the Loddon River two days earlier while

Child was present while mother was attacked by central Victorian man

The Bendigo Magistrates' Court heard the child - who is not yet of school age - had told others that Hayden Griffiths, 23, had "punched my mummy and really hurt my mummy".

Griffiths has pleaded guilty to charges including two counts of assault, two counts of recklessly causing injury, two counts of unlawfully assaulting a female, unlawfully assaulting by kicking and recklessly engaging in conduct - specifically choking a female - that placed them in danger of serious injury.

'They won't believe you if you tell anyone', abuser told child

In sentencing Hopkins, Magistrate Sarah Leighfield told the victim's family members, who were in the court, that she hoped this would help the now adult woman move on,

He told her to hop into bed and when she did he "put his arms around her and hugged her" before committing an indecent act over her clothes.

The court heard he told her, "Don't tell anyone" and "They won't believe you if you tell anyone", before he drove her to another property.

She said while Hopkins' plea was not at t

Members of Bendigo's 1974 civil engineering cohort toured the university campus recently and while graduates have worked locally as well as all across Australia and the world, they were still keen to see the latest research in the field.

Former nurse turned up at stranger's house with a machete and knife

The 29-year-old former nurse is also facing charges including drug trafficking, criminal damage and stalking, after the court heard he followed a CBD worker home from a store and threatened them at their house, before attending the home at a later date when the victim was away.

The court heard the man was dealing with significant mental health issues at the time - exacerbated by his drug use - and had been trying to seek help.

That same day he followed his victim home, although his lawyer Kari

'Goliath beat David': climate protestors fined $200 for bank trespass

Ms Metcalf told the Bendigo Magistrates' Court the trio had been "cooperative and polite, but resolute in their refusal" to leave the premises, and that she had found them "genuine" and "sincere".

The magistrate said there was "no objective evidence" of NAB making threats or of the specific financial discussions within the bank which the trio said they were protesting.

Having been found guilty, retired carbon economics lecturer and senior corporate strategy advisor Ms Levetan told the co

Copland has also been charged with making two threats to kill, and a count of reckless conduct placing a person in danger of serious injury - namely by pushing a woman's face into a pillow.
